Ancient Structures.
The interior of the arch oa which the equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington rested, at Hyde Park gate, was found on being taken down, to be honeycombed with rooms, m which a colony of twenty persons, incluling the janitor and his family, six policeoisn and a madioal student, lived. When the old palace at Somerset House was pulled down .to make room for the ne.v Government offices, it wa* found that a prolific colony of cripples and boggars had been squatting there, aud thsp a gang af coiners plied their trade m tha cellars. So when the old Winter Palace &t St^ Petersburg was buraed down it was discovered that nearly 300 people had. been living for years on the roof of the edifice ; that they kept cows and grew vegtable-t, and that had been born and man died on that old eyrie.
