The family bad tea between 4 and 5 m the kitchen and then went into the pallor,, when their attention ..was called by the smoke and the kitchen was discovered m a blaze. The flames spread vary rapidly, only a. little-front room furniture beinsr saved The. house is insured m the National for £400, and the furniture £250 m the Union. The fire spread rapidly to the adjoining five-roomed cottage, owned and occupied by Capt. Shore ot the Comet.. Neaily all the contents were got one safely. Capt.. and Mrs Short are both absent from Wellington, but th<s family occupied tfce house, which is insured m the South British for £250, bnt it is not known if the furniture is insured. The House of Mr Prouse also caught on fire, but.ia not much damaged. The contents were removed. The house^and furniture is insured for £500 m the South British, the )os3 is trifling. ; Another cottage owned by Mr Mears also caught but very little damage done. It waa insured for £100 m the National.

The Fire Brigade, airaogements were very unsatisfactory.
