Official Stringency.

[^Wanganm Herald.] We were informed to-day of what appeared a very smart enforcement of his duty by one of the Government officials last evening. As tbe train from Feilding was proceeding near Makino, the cow-catcher caught one of the bovine species, which was lying on the rails, and carried it some distance. The train being stopped, several passengers alighted to ascertain the cause of the obstruction. When it was found that the poor beast was m a terribly mangltd state, at the request of the passengers one ot their number (a Mr H. Hewett) cut its throat to end its misery, and rolled the carcase off the line. While he was washing his hands m the ditch, the guard blew his whistle, and the train was just starting, when Mr Hewitt attempted to jump on. The guard, however, pushed him off, and would not let him get up, Mr Hewitt having, m consequence, to walk about nine miles before he could get accommodation. He acted for the benefit of the authorities, an<* naturally feels that he was very hardly dealt wiih.
