Tax-Collecting.
A novel way of collecting taxe<* has been hit upon by the Mayor of Vadn« lesti, a small Roumanian c immunity. He found much difficulty m collecting taxes, until one day, when the men were all m the fields, hs descended with twenty subordinat- s upon their houses and carried off their wives to his lock* up. When tbe men returned from their work at nighfc and discorded the desolation which had be j n wrought they all with one accord went to the public house to drown their sorrows, or perhaps, to celebrate their deliverance. But a few day? afterwards recollection having 1 brought them to their senses, they paid the taxes and recovered their wives.
