Secular Education.
(by telkokaph; (united press association.) Christohurch, June 7. At the Board of Education, correspondence was read from the Bishop and ministers to the Board, asking thst children \t the Normal School should not be dismipsed after secular teaching, so to avoid the difficulty of reassembling them for religious instruction. The Chairman read the following proposal he had drafted : — '-The Board cannot undertake to make any provision for the teaching of religion, but the school will be dismissed m the playgroand at the hours agreed upon, when ministers can make their own arrangements with the children. Certain rooms will be appointed for their use." After considerable discussion j the following moved by Mr Montgomery, seconded by Mr Farr, was carried :— " That, m order |to allow those who may wish to give religious instruction to the children an , opportunity of doing so, the school will be dismissed oa Tuesdays at 11 30 a.m., «nd on Thursdays at 3.30 p.m., when religious bodies c»n make their own arrangements. The principal will be instructed to allow the use of sufficient rooms." The attention of the Board was called to a school m which religious instruction is stated to be given during school hours, and the Inspector was instructed to inquire into the matter.
