BURNING OF A STACK OF WHEAT.

A. ser>ons accident occurred this morning y in a gravel pit near the Racecourse, on Hammond's farm* A mannamed John Cotton, employed by Read and Gorton, contractors, was filling a cart with mfctal when about ten torn* of earth tell, covering 1 him. Only' Cotton and Jessop were m the pit at the time, Jessop' escaped; junhuffc, audiproceeded to dig Cotton out. Having obtained assistance, Cotton was removed to Broughton's Hotel, where he is now being attended by Dr Frood. A valuable stack of wheat on Mr A. Brookie's tarm, Parawanui, was destroyed by fire this morning while being, threshed; Some sparks from the engine ignited the, samp, .an i all efforts to. stay the flames were futile; The stack! was not insured.
