Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) Suivant la Verite. TUESDAY, MAY 29, 1883. FORGERY OF LABELS.
Mr Parkbr, the Secretary of the Victorian United Licensed Victuallers' Association, has on several occasions pointed oat- that/; the manufacture of forged labels" and of cases bearing fraudulent brands is carried on to a very large extent m Melbourne). Beceritly he stated the facts within his knowledge m the form of queries. "Who uses," he asks, "the scores of JDKZ boxes, made and branded m a Melbourne suburb ?' Who manufactures 1 and who ;US6s::the forged labels and capsules that are, produced and absorbed by thousands m ."th,e i .metrqpMUs ? Why do empty oisks ot Martell. Hennossey, &c , bring such/ High prices, and what are they refilled with ? " Mr .Parker thinks that, these questions indicate a sphere of. duty m which half-a-dozen first-class men mipjht do the State much service $• and we are decidedly of the r same opinion. -Iv this = connection we might remark that bottled "English ale," properly (Or apparently so) stamped, labelled, &c, can be sold m Manawatu, retail, at the price of one shilling a bot r tle, for quarts j wherr>a B •the wholesale ; price 6t the genuine article by the importer is something like 14s per doz. The questions naturally suggest themselves i Who are the yendors? and Who are the consumers ? That everything (except the glass bottles containing the stuff) is spurious, will be appafent to ariypne giving the matter a moment's consideration . It is the quantity of #c- liquor Consumed m this Colony that is so destructive m its effects, mentally and physically speaking. A large per centage .of our population. is annually poisoned by the abominable compounds sold as English Ale, and bottled liquors of various kinds. Temperancft reformers might 1 include m their legitimate sphere of operations, the detection and punishjpaent.of those unprincipled ' persons who traffic m spurious liquors.
