His father died when; he was thirteen, and a.s he grew up be! resolved" to emigrate; 'married; andi came out to Melbourne m 1839 ; bought a cattle run m the Western Port district ; but m -1846, not finding it very profitable; he came to Melbourne and commenced business as a draper ; took an active part m th? agitation m favor of a Beparatiorr - frdm r^eV South Wales, and alsej m the formation of the Anti-Transportation League m 1851.: Inthat year he was elected for Kilmore ;■ »ih 1857 became Chief SecEßtarj, only held office for six weeks. In 1858. again cameinto power, and retained it until the-end- =oorf r 1859 ;in October,he 1861 j- returned to office for. the third time. ( His Government passed several important "measures; amongst ■ others the Electoral Law Amendment Act and the Land Act of 1862. In 1863 thoy retired,. and he remaiaedin Uppo-i sition until 1866, when he paid a visit to Europe. He returned, .m 1867, and was elected to, the Upper House. for the Central Province m 1868. In 1874 he resigned his seat- intending to re-enter fihe-Lowei House, ; but ...was twice>de-: feated.
