To-day's Despatches.
(By Tklegraph.) (united press association) WELLiNOTOur, This Day. A robbery of jewellery occurred recently either at Wellington, Kaikoura, or on board the steamer Wakatu. Mr Skippington, a new arrival, took passage to Kaikoura by the steamer, and on his arrival at hw destination his boxes were sent to the hotel. Two or three .days later they were removed to his future abode. It was then found that one box had been tampered with, and Mr Skippington says that jewellery to the value of £100 has been abstracted. On return of the Wakatu early this mbrain? the detßCtives made a carefal examination of the j crew, but nothing suspicions has been, however, found. It is expected that the alterations to ! the Parliament BaiHiDga will ba completed m about a week's time, A youog man named Edward Dowling was killed at Tenui by a fall from his horse. He was a station hand. The Post's correspondent at- Nelson telegraphs that Mr Shaw* has just arrived from Reeitcta. v He says tho petition against his election is all bunkum. Th 9 police yesterday visited the various hair-dressing and tobacconists' shops, ordering them to close their premises. It is understood that the action has been taken under the English A.ct of Charles 2nd, which provides that no persons shall follow their ordinary vocation on the Sabbath, unless for charity, or m case of necessity. The police will prosecute any shops iound open naxt Sunday. Auckland, This Day. Major Withers, officer m charge of the Volunteers, died on Saturday of bronchitus, aged 76. Hokitika, This Day. The Isabella Anderson schooner, from Wanganui, is ashore on the North Spit, through the tow rope par tins; whilst being towed m this morning. Chbistohurch, This Pay. The Salvation Army had "knee drill" at the Gaiety Theatre four times yesterday. The building was crowded each time. Hennelly, charged with horse-steal-ing, who jumped from the train while at full speed, was retaken unhurt. . The lighting of Lyttelton Harbor by electricity on Saturday night was a complete success. Dunedin, This Day. A man named John Butcher died at the Hospital on Saturday from injuries he received about a week ago by falling into a barrel of carbolic acid. He was a bhepherd, employed at Oottesbrook station, Strath«Taieri, where the accident befel him. Invercasgill, This Day. TheJFarmecs Co-operative Association have decided to wind up, and it will be re-organized under the Joint Stock Companies Act, with a capital of £50,000, m £5 Shares.
