Valueless Cheques.

Notwithstanding the heavy terms of imprisonment imposed upon persons found guilty of obtaining money by false pretences, m^n are still found who are willing to risk losing their freedom for a time by passing valueless cheques. One of these individuals is Fdward Dore, who appeared at . the ' B.M. dourt Wellington on Saturday morning to answer a charge of having obtained £11 1 9s fronTMr T. Flaherty,; landlord of the Commercial Hotel, by fraud. The evidence of the prosecutor went to showthat on the 19th instant the accused, a young man about 26 years of age, entered the hostelry and requested him to, cash a cheque for £12. The witness agreet P to dp so, and on the man endorsing the document £11 19s was handed to him, a shilling being retained for exchange, as the cheque was on a bank at Palmerston North. In due course the cheque, was presented at the Union Bank, and on telegraphing to Palmerston North it was ascertained that the prisoner did not possess ah account there.; The accused was a, stranger to him, and on witness asking him whether the document was good,- Dore said that it was.. Chiet Detecive Browne, who condacted the csse for tbe prosecution, asked . for a remand, m order to enable farther eiidence .to be procured, • and the • case was adjourned until the 27th instant, bail being allowed, prisoner in^ and two sureties of £50 each, ' '•-"
