At the Kaiapoi Borough Council meeting the auditors reported a deficency :ot£lo4ia the accounts for the past; year. A report on the. special audit of i the accounts for 1868 showed that most of the dog tax and rate books and numerous vouchers are missing, and that no , petty cash accounts had been kept since/ July , 1 874. Since the Stamp Act came into foree f not more than 25 per cent, of the vouchers had been stamped, and cheques had frequently been paid before vouchers were signed. There , had been "great laxity every year m auditing the accounts, but m the absence ot the books mentioned, it was utterly impossible to fiud out the de* ! ficiencies. There was a sum of £250 found m the <*ash«book to general account, but there was no entry m the bank pass book, and the chashier at the bank could not say what had become of it. The report was referred back to the auditor for further information.
