A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce, waited upon tha Minister of Public Works yesterday to urge the completion of the Manutahi-Hawera section ot the West Coast Railway. 4Jter some lengthy conversation, Mr Johnston assured the deputation that the Government would bring the l«ne to a termination with the utmost possible speed, and that the Ministry would ask for an appropriation next session to complete it. ; The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile report under date London, April 24. The Wool market, unchanged. Up to date, 30,501 bales have arrived. The wheat market is irregular but has nn upward tendanoy. Adelaide ia worth 503, and N.Z.' 46s 6d p-w 4961b5, N.Z. wheat to arrive, is worth 46s per 48 01 bs April Bill of lading; and 45s 6d for May Bill of lading. The tallow market is firm. Best mutton is quoted at 465 ; best beef, 44s 6d per cwt. The leather market is quiet ; best hides worth lid per lb. J : New Zealand flax market is quiet; fine quality worth £28 per ton; :■;"■ Thames, This Day. Yesterday afternoon a man named HSdmonds, a small farmer, here, wa3 descending m a trap a hilly ioad from his farm leading to town, when the horse bolted, throwing him clear out of Hie" trap, and breaking his neck. The in* quest will be held to-morrow. - ■. . pUNBDiK,; ThisiDay. Frederick Wain and his wife were committed to trial yesterday for. manslaughter, bail being allowed. Detective Bain is still pursuing inquiry m the neighbourhood m regard, to the Chinese murder at Roxburgh; | but the whole affair remains shrouded m mystery. It is suggested that a reward should be offered. Inveroargill, This Day. I i In Massey's case, the jury returned a verdict of guilty against the male prisoner, and not guilty against his wife, on the ground that she was under his coeriocn. TiMARtj, This 'bay. A fire, broke out m Frank's Brewery last nuht^and did considerable damage, which is covered by insurance. OpuNAita, This Day. The Bon, Mr Bryce arrived here last night. This morning a deputation of Opunake citizens waited upon and presented an address to Mr . Bryce, who took occassion to correct a mistake made m telegraphing his remarks af tor his arrival at New Plymouth, , stating ' that the King country might now be considered as opened for surveys for road and railway purposes, but with regard to other surveys he anticipated consider* able delay. Wanganui, This Day. The charge against John Cooper ; Jowett, for carnal aasanlt on : a girl niae yeajs of age is now proceeding. It is a most disgusting case . .;
