A Sad Story.
[Wellington Paper.] A peculiar cas* of distress has some before the Wellington B3.3 evoleat Socity. A.n Anglican clergyman arrived here lately from Home, with a young wife and five children. He appears to hive been sent to the colony because he had become a trouble and Bcandal to friends at Home. He was first publicly heard of here as hiving been seat by the Bishop of Wellington to take clerical duty ah Palmeraton North, where the reverend "new chum" arrived, m a state of disgraceful drunkenness. He could hot remain there after such an unapostolic introduction, and he seeems to have drifted into the condition of a drunken loafer. He got employed as kitcheninan at the Hospital, but could not keep sober. Then he was employed m the same rough work at two or three hotels ia Wellington. His wife and young family (oue baby at the breast) were left to the precarious help of charitable persons. The wile's sister resides m Wellington, and seems to Have done all she was able to help the poor deserted wife. The drunken husband's next escapade was a threat; to drown himself, for which purpose he left his wife, .and was missing for two or three weeks. The police were asked to make inquiries, and ascertained that he was doing odd jobs at a sheep«station near Wellington. There he is supposed to be vegetating now, without sending a sixpence to his deserted wife, or even making a casual inquiry as to how his little children are being fed. The wife's pitiable pondition of desertion and want was reported to the Committee of the Benevolent hociety, and it was agreed that rations be supplied to prevent absolute want, while the ladies of the Church with which the pwr wife was connected are to be asked to make such provision as they may be able for enabling the wife to get suitable employment.
