In Memoriam.

THE LATE OAPIAIN RENDER. [Wanganui Pape/."] Now that the loss or the schooner Hannah Barratt, with all hands, is unfortunately placed beyond doubt, some few particulars about the skipper, Captain Renner, may prove interesting. Ft has already been mentioned m New Zetland journals how he did signal service m saving life when the Orpheus was wrecked at the Manakau Heads, and how on another oc-asion he took , the crpw off a ship that had " turned i turtle "m mid ocean. Captain Renner was one of the first skippers who brought ** steamer up the Wanganui River, the old Wong* Wonga, which he commanded (and m which many Wanganui settlers maie a pleasant trip), being one of our pioneer boats. In after days he had command of the Stormbird (m which Captain Doile served under him as mate), and of the Rangatira, and subsequently became manager ashore m Wellington for the now defunct New Zealand Steam Shipping Company. It is said that the first vessel he ever commanded m New Zealand waters was a schooner called the Lady Grey, and we believe that Captain Irvine, the present Pilot, formerly served before the mast m some craft m which Captain Renner was skipper. It is to be feared that he has now gone to his last account m the Hannah Barratt, but the memory of his high qualities, sound seamanship, and g> nial disposition will long be kept green m the hearts of those who knew him. He leaves behind him a grownup funnily, several of his sons occupying good positions m Wellington.
