Education Board.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held yesterday. There were present — W. H. Watt, Esq., M.H.R., (chairman), Sir W. Fox, Messrs Bakor, TapKo, Snelson, Ross, Sanson, and Bridge. Appointments Committee. Halcouib9 : Mrs Harris' resignation as assistant teacher was accepted, as from Ist April. — Moved by Mr Sanson, seconded by Mr Ross, That the appoint- | ment of assistant teacher of Halcombe be offered to Miss Verdon, of Kohi, and that the inspector fill the vacancy at Kohi as soon as possible.— K.arere : It was resolved that Mr Flood be appointed to the Karere School to fill the vacancy caused by the transfer of Mr Guthrie. It was also . decided to appoint Mr Dowling temporarily to Karere School, pending the arrival of Mr Flood, salary to be at the rate of £150 per annum. — Palmerston : Miss Dunne's resignation was accepted as trom the end of May, and it was decided to appoint Mr F. L. Mackin as assistant teacher, and that Miss Hamilton's name be nlaced on the list of applicants subject to her undergoing the usual preliminary examination. — Foxton : Mr Stewart was appointed to FoX r on, on the request of the committee troru month to month, until a regular certificated teacher be appointed. — It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Baker, seconded by Mr Sanson, that m future teachers' wives cannot be appointei teachers under the Board, m schools m charge of their husbands. Architect's Report. Messrs Atkins ami Olere, architects j to the Board, reported at length m re- | gard to the school masters' residence at Halcombe. — The estimated cost of putting m a thorough slate of repair, with tidditions, would be £135.— 1t was resolved to proceed with the work at once. j BUNNYTHORPE. \ The chairman of the Bunnythorpe Committee wrote asking for a grant of £12 to line and brick a chimney m the class-room.— Mr Saason explained the nature of the requirements, and moved that the application be granted, — This ' was agreed to. Otaki. Mr W. H. Silcox wrote stating that the following gentlemen had been returned a committee for the Otaki district: — Messrs J. Brown, F. Bright, H. Eager, P. Anderson, T. McVeary M. Carkeek, and the writer, who had since been appointed chairman. Orou* Bridge Letter froM Mr Simpson, stating that he was under the impression that he was to receive capitation allowance for the whole of the children attending the school during August, more especially as he had been at considerable expense m providing suitable room, desks, &c. He considered he was entitled to receive over £20, instead of receiving a little more than £1*. — The Board instructed the Secretary to inform Mr Simpson that the Board would not grmt him capitation for the month of August, Mr Sneison to give him any further information he might require. Moutoa. Letter from the Committee applying for 8 wings, see-saw, hori« zontal bar, &c, for children's amusement. — The Board considered this was a matter for the Committee to attend to. Training College. Letter from tbe Education Board Department m reply to a communica" tion from the Board's Secretary as to provision for pupil teachers attending from Wanganui, allowing 25s per week for board and lodging, and pay ing fare one way, the Department to be satisfied as to the character of the lodgings obtained.— lt was decided to notify pupil-teachers of the district of the fact. Miscellaneous. CJanson.— The tenders of Messrs R. and E. Tingey for painting teachers residence was accepted. Awahuri .-Letter applying for funds to form and metal approach to school, the ' cost being estimated at £4. — On the motion of Mr Taplin, the request was granted. Clerical Assistance. — The Chairman considered it necessary that the Secretary should have assistance which could be obtained for from -250 to £100. Re» solved, That applications be invited for the post, the age of applicant not to be less than 1 6 years, and the salary not to exceed £65 per annum, applications to be m before next meeting. Manchester School. — MrSnelson said that certain work agreed to by the Board had been carried out by tbe Committee, and he now suggested that, as certain other work was required, a sum of £b be voted for the purpose. — Agreed to. The board then adjourned.
