A Mushroom City.
A curious history attaches to the town of McGregor^in Texas, which is situf ated 150 miles west^of Tyler, and 20 miles west of Waco. The site was ! selected as the crossing of the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe and the Texas and St. Louis Railroads, one day m September/1881. The report spread, and bj the text morning the place was staked out m town lots, with al! the .details of' streets, 'squares, &c., which are generally thje "work of time on the part of the survey ore. At the opening sale the lots were disposed of at the fate of one and a half per minute. ; rln ihe aggregate, 442 lots, covering. 30.0. acres, ' were sold, and next <Jay two towns were • } started, ;ime wkhijtftwo miles, Bnd thje other thjt;ee inile^^.distant. Shanties appeared on the prairies to be moving with all jspeed on rollers towards McGregor,' and by "the second day 12 houses were under construction, whiie the owners camped round m cents. At the close of ; tw6 months the town numbered "170 houses, with a population o! 500 souls.
