Vegetable Tallow.
The increasing rarity of tallow of animal origin has attracted the attention of candle and soap manufacturers to a vegetable grease introduced into Europe towards 1848, and the use o^which is steadily growing m France UW England. The tallow tree is gi^Chinese origin ; it grows also m the nOrthnwesk Of India, and has been introduced into South Carolina, where it has been cultivated for ten years. It produces a fruit the core of which is covered with a layer of thick tallow, and .contains a yellowish aromatic oil, used m the same country as a heating .agent. After the plucking, which takes place m July m the south, and m October m the north, of China, hot water is. poured on them, and the grease is skimmed off, after going cold, with a spoon. The tallow, moulded into the form of bamboo canes, is directly brought into commerpe. -This tallow presents the appearance of a greenish mass cry stalised, having a peculiar odor. It melts at 44.3deg, and becomes solid again at 40.3deg. »— — — — — — ■— — —— —« i■ ; -
