Mr Grant Datf, the Governor ©f Madras, lately took offence at sonie■thing that appeared m a local paper, and m the heat of the moment ordered that the offending journal should be deprived of any Government advertisements, and that it was not to ba supplied with any information from the Secretariat or other Government offices. The matter was- not only indignantly taken up by Ihe Indian Press, but the London Times itself took occasion m au editorial to call upon Lord Kioiberley to bring Mr Grant Dufi to his spnses, and the Governor was made to see tbat what is called the " power of the Press" is not an empty title, and that journalistic liberty is not lightly; to be trifled witht
