The Drama m Palmerston north.

PALMERSTON NORTH «GA.RRICK " AMA.TEUK DRAMATIC CLUB. A meeting of the above took place at the Commercial Hotel last evening, at wb/ch there was a very large and influential attendance. Solarge that many were compelled to stand m. the passages, and others hear the proceedings through the windows from the street. Mr James King was voted to the chair, and having opened the meeting dwelt upon the " elevating " influences such » club would have on many of the young men present, whose only relaxation consisted of muff pool or a game of shilling m. He trusted that the person who furnished the report to the Manawatu Standatd of last meeting, if present, wou'd give a truthful record of tbe proceedings of the present meet* ing. (hear hear) He noted with pleasure that the attempt of that person to throw ridicule over the proceedings had defeated its end. (Loud and prolonged applause.) The chairman here called upon Mr Haul tain to give a summary of the proceedings of the previous meeting) as the minutes were to voluminous to read, occupying 32 sheets of foofscap. Proposed by Mr Hauitain, and seconded by Mr Partridge — That ■ the Club be called the Palmerston North Garrick Amateur Dramatic Club. Carried by acclamation. j Proposed by Mr Bentley, and seconded by Mr Simpson — That the annual subscription be 10s ; members free admission, (A. voice, Will that admit our Misters, our cousins, and our aunts?) Loud cries of " Put him out." Amendment by Mr Hauitain, and seconded by Mr KnighG— Thafc the subscription be 5a yearly, with no privilege to members. Mr Hauitain spoke at some length, and very feelingly, m faver of the above statement, that if properly managed any performer could put his stage wardrobe m a bandbox or a collar box, and that a 5s subscription from those present would amount to more than would clothe the whole company m the most gorgeous stage array. Another amendment was now proposed by Mr Walton, and seconded by Mr Swift— That the yearly entrance be one guinea, members having free entrance to the performances. Sir Swift, m support of this amend" ment, said that the fact of calling our Club after Mr Garrick. (a voice, " Who was Ganick ? '') and making the members' fee ss, was enough to mke that worthy gentleman turn m his grave, and rise from the dead. (Hear, hear.) The vote of the meeting being here taken, the proposal ior a 5s membership was carried. At this stage of the proceedings an instalment ot Is out of the 5s was called for, and the meeting went into committee, several hats being called into requisition to enable the " ballot " being properly taken. The result of the " ballot " was watched with great interest, several candidates having " tied." [The remainder of the report will appear to-morrow. [
