"An 'Orrible Traguidee."
A well-known local vocalist was m« duced a few nigb/.a ago to give a private rehearsal of his powers to a select party, who were enchanted with his gift of song. Each succeeding effort eclipsed the previous one, and the plaudits were loud and rapturous. By special request the " Sailor's Grave " was given, and the Binder put forth his best effort, drawing tears from the eyes of a greyhound belonging to one of the party, the animal showing 1 its appreciation by a sympathetic and prolonged howl. As the fi nal cadenceß lingered on the ear, the singer, m response to an enthusiastic encore made a low bow to the audience, and what followed a ready rhymster, apparentiy m imitation of Tennyson, thus describes : — What to him was love or hope ? What to him was joy or care ? He stepped on a plug of Beaven's soap, A youth had left on the topmost stair. And his feet flew out like fierce wild things, And he struck each stair with a sound like a drum ; And the lads below, who planned the joke, Laughed like fiends to Bee him come.
