The tests of the Woods and Wests inghouse brakes were brought to a conclusion yesterday by trial stoppages down a steep incline. The Westinghouse trai a attained- a speed of 72 miles an hour, and was stopped m 33J seconds after running 1951 feet. This result was greatly superior to Woods'. The award of the Board has not yet been published. Earnest Giles, tho explorer, arrived at Melbourne yenerday from a recent sxploring expedition. A telegram from Perth states that Information has beaa received that Sir lohn Pope Hennessy, the n«w Grover aor of Mauritius, will not arriva there for some months, and that consequently Mr .Napier Broome's arrival m Western Australia will be deferred.
