Education Board.
The usual monthly meeting of the Wnn^amii Rducatiou Board was beld yesterday. Present : —Messrs Hanson (chairman), Notraan, Baker, Snelson, Bridge, Sir W. Fox, and Rev. J. K033. Appointment Committee. — Resolved that Mr tftraehan's resignation at Jack^ytown be accepted. — Resolved that Mr James' appointment ba confirm d, but the Secretary inform him that his appointment is only temporary, and that he will be expec'fid to come up at the next examination.-— Resolved that air Lock be appointed to Parawanui. if he will accept, if not, refer tho raittorto the Finance Committee. — Resolved that Mr .Smith, on being exarrined by the Inspestoi-jbe appointfd as second master at the Palmerston School. Building Grant. — A. letter was received trom the Education Department stating that the grant of £4370 would be at the. disposal of the Board at the end of next month, or early m March. I Auditing Accounts. — A communication was received from the Education Department asking If the Board had any objection to the present mode of auditing the accounts of local school committees. The secretary was instructed to reply that no alteration was deaui'd necessary. Halcombe. — A protest was entered by Mr Bell againßt the validity of the ; election of School Committee on the | grounds that thn meeting did uot taka place until 8.30; ani further, the meeting 1 was adjourned m order to prepare the annual report ; also, the Chairman refrained from giving his casting vote, and caused a second election to take place for the seventh man on the Committee, The Secretary was authorised to reply that Mr Bell had not shown sufficient grounds for upsetting the validity of the election. . Householders' Meeting. — >ir Bridge breught before the notice of the Board the inconvenient hour named m the circu'ar sent out by the Board for the meeting of householders. The Secre« tary was instructed that m future he was to notify 8 o'olock instead of 7 for the time of meeting.
Election of Committee. — The Chairman stated that there were several places where they had failed to elect Committees, amongst others Otaki and Foxcon. — The Secretary who was instructed to call iresh meetings at places where they had failed to elect a Committee, said that no Committee had been formed at Peilding, and among other places.
Upper Makino Road A letter was received from Mr Sexton advocating the site at Upper Makino m preference to the Bite at the villiage of Stanway. — The question of a site was referred to a Committee consisting of Messrs Sanson, Snelson, and Sir W. Fox, with a view of deciding on the most suitable position for a school. Palmnrston.— A letter was received from the School Committee, stating that at a meeting of the Committee they had accepted the services of Mr Smith as second master. The tenders for draining and gravelling had bdfcn accepted.— The Secretary said that this draining had never been authorized.— Mr Notman said the Committee should have applied to the Board for leave to do the work before proceeding with it. He did not know how far the? might condone the offence, for if the Board paid the account without authorising the work, they would be establishing a very bad precedent. — Mr Sanson was of opinion tnat too much money had already been spent at Palmerston. —Mr Snelson said he was not quite sure whether the work had been authorised or not, but he was rather inclined to think it had. He would rather that the matter be held over m order that the Committee might be asked for their authority for laying down a drain. Agreed.
Resignation. — A telegram was received from Mr Coutts resigning his seat as a mombor of the Board.— < Mr Sanson moved th it Mr Coatts' resignation be accepted with regret ; seconded by Sir W. Fox ana carried. — On the motion of Mr Notraan, it was decided to inßtrucfc the Secretary to take Bteps to fill the extraordinary vacancy.
Building Committee. — The Boaid went into Committee on the report of the Building Committee, and on res turning, the following works were agreed to : — Beaconstield : Only one tender received, which was m excess of architect's estimate ; fresh tenders to be called for. Makino Road: New residence ; tenders being too high, to be re* advertised. Manchester : New school ; no tenders received ;to be readvertised.
Inspector's Salary.— The Inspector's salary was increased to £400 from the Ist January 1883, on the motion of Mr Bridge, seconded by Mr Rosa.
Jackejtown. — In answer to an application for additions to the school buildings, the Secretary was instructed to reply that the application could not be entertained, as the Board were * not m funds.
Fitzherbert. — A resident of thia dis~ trict, Mr Engles, wrote asking the Board to take steps to erect a school. — The Secretary was authorised to m-jke enquiries.
Financial. — Tt was decided to make up the estimates tor tbe onsuin;r year, and forward them to the Government. The Board then adjourned.
