COMMERCIAL NEWS.
WELLINGTON 1 MARKETS. In this, our first monthly commercial snromary ior this year, we (Wellington paper) regret we cannot report a satis* factory stare of trade. Several failures are reported during the month, which, althonsh of no magnitude, clearly indicate the policy of the banks to which we referred a few months ago. By the last mail advices a satisfactory decrease m the shipments to New Zealand was perceptible. We therefore are of opinion tha^. there will, be a considerable reduction m the value of our import for the next quarter, and until then we cannot expect commerce to impiove. Oar imports have for some time b9en considerably over our requirements, resulting m ruiaous competition and unprofitable- trading. Cornsacks — Some extensive business has been done south , stocks are very heavy ; ex ship we quote 83 per doz , from stock 8s 3d ; a few tair-sized sales are reported locally. Hops— No speculation has taken place locally : from Nelson we hear of sales at 4s 3d to 4s 6d : American pocket hops are quoted at 4s to 4s 3d. < >ilmen's stores of all descriptions are well suppl ed, but quo« tations are most unsatisfactory to imp^tere. Sugars — Company's has the .usual trade inquiry, and quoted at L4l, L 37, and L 33, for IW, IC, and C respectively : the New Zealand market i 3 glutted with Mauritius sugars : crushed loaf sells very slowly, at L 46 to L4B. Galvanised corragated iron is very dull of sale, and stocks are excessive, over 340 tons having been landed during the past month ; from stock we quobe JL2_4 for 26 guage, and ex ship, at L 23 10s. Fencing wire, .Nos 6, 7, 8 are quoted, ex ship, at Ll3 10s per ton all round, equal quantities of each size : from stock we quote LI4, Ll4 10a, and Lls ; for Nos 7 and 8 a slight reduction is obtainable, as stocks are heavy , 4 barb galvanised wire is quoted at L 52 .'black L4B. Stocks of wire nails are not much decreased since our last, and £18 10s is quoted for assorted parcels, equal' ■quantities' of each size. Axes are reported as being sold under 60s , but, the report requires confirmation. Colonial Produce— Generally the harvest'" prbspedt's are" consid* ered satisfactory. Flour is still quoted ?*' £l.l. by local mill, but sales of firstclass Southern brands have been made by auction at £10 10s. Oats are weakening : we quoted 3s to 3s 6d.
