A CLERICAL EDITOR.

(to the editor of the standard.) Sir, — I see the Manawatu Times treats its readers to a paragraph referrinp; to me. The mixture of clerical temper, "pious falsehood," and declamatory outburst of self-satisfaction, which it contains points to a wounded self-conceit, and is tmly characteristic of the clerical printer who manages the paper. Jndeeed, the perusal of the article has enabled me to understand why the proprietary cannot afford some new type. I have no doubt of the per* son's " holiness," but I must adroit I should like to see his w faith " accompanied with a little more truthfulness. Among other false statements, he asserts that I insulted the "proprietor" of the paper. But, Sir, I have never seen one of the proprietors. The only man I spoke to was the manager, ourely this individual will not expect me to believe him on his bare word when he calls himself " proprietor." Furthermore, he will make his 38 subscribers believe that he put me outside the door ;• but several can prove the contrary. As regards coarse language^ it is purely imaginary on his part. I deiy him or anybody elße to prove that I made use ot any remarks entitled to be termed coarse. I complained of his blundering and ignorant style of reporting my lectures, which, of course, affected his inordinate vanity, and hence the penning of the vituperation ?gainst me. la conclusion, it is my duty to state that although I lost the receipt Of my account, the manager hat not yet taken advantage of it. — I am, &c, O. E. Hugo. Wanganui, Jan. 20. j
