The Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) Suivant la verites SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 1883. CHANGING TEACHERS.
We have already made some extracts I from the very excellent repbrt of the Inspector of Schools ior the Marlborough Education District, and we now turn to that lard before the Nelson Board of Education, on the 4th of the present mouth. In it the Inspector condemns, and w^ think rightly, the constant changing ol teachers from school to school, which he considers a growing evil, which- haB 1 serionsly impaired the efficiency of the best schools. 'Mr Hodgson views the matter m the light that if promotion were thw object ot these -changes, something might be said ia their favour ; but pure restlessness is at the bottom of most of them, the emoluments of t!.e post abandoned being usually; nearly, or quite on a par withtboseOi the post sought. He lurth'-r states that a year must elapse between the date of aj pointment to one school and the date of application fo r another ; but even, this stipulation has been found inadequate to' deal effectually with the mischief. The Inspector suggested that teachers should remain at least two years m their positions, considering that a shoiter period_would be insufficient to enable him to make his mark m the school, or or to allow the Education Boa>d and its Inspector to form any decided opinion *s4o* his merits as a teacher. We should take precisely the same view of the matter ; and like the Inspector, if we had to choose a schoolmaster, would eschewsthe*man of many schools, knowing thai, whatever else he might be, be was certainly fickle, — a most undesirable attribute. .";" v ..
