The shop was gutted , and Cox's stock damaged next door ; also the shop adjacent. George Olsen has been committed for trial for attempted murder of his wife, Elizabeth Olsen. James Thornley was drowned at Northern Wairoa while watering his horses m the Mongonui Creek. Wellington, Jan. 12. Up to the present time upwards of 170 applications have been received, applying for the right to participate m the £6000 granted by Parliament laßt session towards free libraries. John M~iklejohtt, who stands committed for trial for stealing a large number of Sir John Hall's and Mr Bealey's sheep, was brought up on another charge of stealing five hundred sheep belonging to Mr Cordy, of Hororata. Accused, who is a sheep farmer, and well known throughout Canterbury, was committed for trial on this charge also.
