The Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) Suivant La verite WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 1883. THE PENINSULA SEAT.
With Mr Featon's death the seat for the Peninsula has become vacant. The names of Mr Labnach and Mr Stodt were at one time mentioned as those of probable candidates. Then a Mr DOcVelly came forward, but it does not appear that his views on the Education question are such a* to please a large section ot tb.fi community. Our readers will he t-urp i>e i to earn that Bishop Moran h b now anoounceii himself. In his address to the electors he says :—- --*' It is difficult to s«y which of those two candidates ( essrx Larkaoh and Doneilt) id most unjust and tyrannical m his }>rmcipl. s ani poicy, and ujpst opposed to the equitable claim of Catholics and others who think with them." He proceeds : " Under these circumstances I ofisr you my services. I do this to afford all just men an opportunity of giving effect to their dis* approbation of the principles and policy ol Mr DONNBI.LY and Mr Larnach on the Education question, and as a protest against the cowardice of some and the tyranny of others. In the position m which I now place myself I only claim to be regarded as a man, a citizen, and an elector of the Peninsula, and as the advocate of fair play and OTon-.ha.nded justice. I shall canvass no man ; I shall employ no ageuts ; such as are willing to vote for me will come to the poll at their own expense, and purely for the purpose of protesting against m justice and advocating wiiat is equitable. I make no apology for assuming this position. I am as much entitled to offer my services to the electors as Mr Donnelly or Mr Larnaoh, or any other man." On all subjects likely to occupy the attention of Parliament, he sayß that his principles will be found fair and just. It will be interesting to watch the result of the exciting contest which now may b 9 anticipated. So far as we are aware, Bishop Morak's candidature is without precedent m the political history of the Colony.
