Serious Charge.
A TOWN CLERK IN TKOUBLE
(by telegraph; (united press association.) Dunedin, Jan. 4. At the Police Court to-day J. M. Massey, formerly Treasurer, was charged with having, on or about October 12th. 1881, stolen two debentures each valued £100, the property of the City Corporation. His wife was also charged with receiving such debentures knowing them to be stolen. It was stated thataltogether the amount involved was about £3300. A remand was granted for a week, and bail allowed amounting m Massey's case to £2400, and Mrs Massey's caao to £1000. It is understood to be alleged that Massey, when Town Clerk some years ago, obtained signatures to what he alleged were duplicate water debentures, and that these have been disposed of m Melbourne. Also that the robbery was discovered through the Bank of New Zealand m London. Mr Massey it is understood, is alleged to have gone to Melbourne recently to casb some of the debentures. It will be remembered that Massey recently brought a charge against a man named Allan, for an accusatiou of conspiracy and attempted arson. He afterwards was dismissed from his position as Town Clerk, though his reputation to the present time has free from stain. The arrest caused great excitement, and further development are anxiously awaited. Punedin, This Day. Mr Massey was bailed out last night, but it is expected that Massey will be released tosdiy.
