ALTHOUGH this office has been in existence for a period ot seven year*, it is Winved that the. object* lor which it w#a established..ore. not sufficiently Known or understood. It is desired to .forth in a conoise fora information respecting the business which this office undertakes The Public Trustee is an officer specially appointed by the Government. 1. To take charge of all kinds of money bonds such as Marriage, settlements, moneys to be in rested tor the benefit of Minors, moneys bequeathed for eharrtable objects, moneys, the, title to which is in dispute, or whose legal owner is unknown, or cannot be found, &c., die. 2. To administer the wills of all persons, who by appointing the Publio Trustee as their executor secure the guarantee of the estate for the due fulfilment of their wishes, and avoid the risk consequent on the appointment of private persons as executors, who not untrequentiy, though earnestly desirous of acting for the benefit of parties interested, fail to carry out legally the objects for which they were appointed, and consequently iuvo<ve themselves and those whose interests they : are suiving to protect in costly and harassing litigation. 8. To take over administration of all estates of which no disposition has beeu made by will, whenever relatives do not wish to moure the responnioilitjr of administration, or canuot from any cause obtain the necessary powers to aot. In such cases it is the duty of the Public Trustee to discharge all legal debts so far as the assets extend, aud divide the residence amongst the next of kin. 4. To take charge of, aud grant lease of all lauds lying waste and unoccupied of which ihe owner is unknown, or who has been absent from the Colony for ten years, having left no known agent. State guarantee is secured for tbe safe custody of all monies placed in the ottioe. The coat of administering estates is very small, iniormation may be obtained from all agents. K. C.
