ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL AT AUCKLAND.
TELEGRAPHIC SUMMARY. (Puu Grkvillb’s Telegram Compakt.) Wellington, Sept. 17. The Nebraska arrived at Auckland yesterday, with the San Francisco mail. No sickness reported. Latest English dates, 17 th August. The Crown Agents for the Colonies announce payments of half-year’s interest due on New Zealand five per cent consolidated loan and New Zealand Government five per cent debentures. Only four persons were saved from a steamer which collided with an emigrant ship in the Channel; the latter was bound for Australia. The last mail was delivered several days late. London, August 17. Parliament was prorogued on the 10th. The Queen was not present. The speech was read by Royal Commission. Her Majesty congratulated Parliament that the controversy on the American indirect claims was over, which had been compassed by spontaneous declaration by the Arbitrators, who entirely consented to her views. Her Majesty reflected with satisfaction that the subjects with which the treaty deals no longer offer impediments between kindred nations. Reference was made to the conclusion of an Extraordinary Extradition Treaty with Germany. Her Majesty declared the determination of her Government to deal more effectually with the East African slave trade, and expressed satisfaction that the South Sea labor traffic had received attention from Parliament. The Repeal Party Procession Act was celebrated throughout Ireland on the 15th. A procession passing through Belfast was stoned by a large crowd. The Protectionists returned the attack, when terrible excitement ensued. On the 17th the riot continued, the city was in an uproar, and many rioters were arrested, the disturbance being only quelled by most active. exertions of the police. A great fire occurred at Geneva on the 11th, destroying £400,000 worth of fac,tory property. . The Emperors of Germany, Russia, and
Austria will meet soon at Berlin, when a proposition will be made for a Congress of European Powers to pass an opinion upon German acquisitions in France, upon the occupation of the Roman States, and to consider a proposition to reverse the Paris Treaty of 1856. An army of 5,000 Egyptians have invaded Abyssinia. They opposed 10,000 men, The Mexican revolution is concluded, the revolutionists accepting an amnesty. A prize fight is to come off in September between Mace and Baldwin. Commercial. — Flax and gum quiet. Wool—third series progressed with spirit, and closed with strong competition at full prices ; superior New Zealand, 17d; average, 15£d. The Nebraska brings 25 passengers, including Rose Evans and a company of theatricals.
