PROPOSED PUBLIC TESTIMONIAL TO BISHOP SELWYN.
A prelimiminary meeting of persons desirous of testifying their feelings on the occasion of the approaching relinquishment of his New Zealand diocese by the Bishop of New Zealand, was held last month, in the Supreme Court Hall, Wellington. A number of the most influential gentlemen of our community, together with some of the leading members of both Houses of Assembly, attended on the occasion. Several Superintendents of provinces were preeent, and Messrs D. Bell, Ormond, Cargill, and llolleston took part in the proceedings. His Honor Mr Justice Johnston took the chair. It was agreed that certain resolutions, having for their object the testifying of the general and unanimous manner in which His Lordship’s character is, on all sides, appreciated in the colony, and the regret felt at parting with one who had so many claims upon the colonists of these islands for the energy and zeal he had displayed on their behalf for a lengthy period of years, be brought up at a future meeting, to be held at the same place, for the purpose of its consideration. Copies of the resolutions would afterwards be forwarded to all parts of New Zealand, in order to give everyone an opportunity of expressing their feelings on this subject. The motion was unanimously agreed to, and the meeting adjourned.—Wellington Evening Post.
