LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

Postponement of Sale. —we are requested to draw the attention of our readers to an advertisement in another column postponing, for the present, the sale announced to take place at the Ship Hotel this day. A lotion Sale.— At a sale held at Blenheim by Mr P. Lawrence, on Friday, the 14th instant, fifty drums of kerosine were sold, in quantities, for ss. Gd. per gallon. The Survey of the Strait. —We understand, says the ‘New Zealand Advertiser,’that the Survey of the Strait, with the view of laying down a telegraphic cable connecting the North and Middle Island, has been completed, and Mr Balfour is of opinion that the best line will be from Port Underwood, through Chaffer’s Passage, into Worscr’s Bay. Appointments. —ln a General Government Gazette’ of the 11th instant, we notice the following appointments : —Couut Gerard Gustavus Duearel de Lapastnre, of St. Helens, Amuri, in the- Province of Marlborough, and Thomas Henry Wigley, Esq., of Amuri, in the Province of Marlborough, to be Justices of the Peace for the Colonj' of New Zealand ; George Lilly Mellish to be Lieutenant in the Marlborough Hangers ; James Mackey, the younger, Esq., to be a Civil Commissioner for the Colony of New Zealand.

Complimentary Dinner.— We are always glad to note the observance of good old timehonoured institutions, ’especially when more honoured in the observance than in the breach, as on the occasion in question ; which was a select gathering of friends at the City Club, on Friday evening last, to give a complimentary farewell to Mr Hugh Kirkcwood, of the Bank of New Zealand, who has been promoted, in the same service, to another scene at Marlborough. The gustatory part of the programme—ala civic banquet—sufficient to entice the eye and tickle the palate of an epicure, was served up by Mr .Steers, which, of course, was done ample justice to ; and after the usual compliments in toast, song, and sentiment, the company broke up before the “ wee short hour,” having spent a most agreeable evening, and wishing much {success in life to their admirable friend and guesff, Mr Hugh Ivirkewood. —‘ Southern Cross.’
