RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT, Picton, Monday, July 17.
(Before G. L. Mellisu, Esq., R.M.) John M'Kown, master of the Maid of the Mill, was brought up charged with not showing proper lights, in conformity with the Merchant Shipping Act Amendment Act, 18G3. Thomas G. Baillie, on his oath, deposed : I am Harbour Master for the Port of Picton. I was coming up Queen Charlotte Sound on Friday evening last. I saw a vessel coming down the' Sound. Stic had no lights up. I hailed her. and ashed where her lights were, and was answered, in the cabin. I said they ought to be shown. I afterwards found out the vessel was the Maid of the Mill. Alfred Bragg on his oath, deposed : I remember Friday evening last. I was along with Mr Baillie. I observed a vessel coming down Queen Charlotte Sound. She had no lights Tip. It was dark at the time. Cross-examined by Defendant : lon were asked twice by Mr" Baillie where your lights were. You replied in the cabin. Joint M'lvown stated that his lights were not up at the time, hut as soon as he thought there was danger, the lights would be shown. lie had no witnesses to call.. His worship remarked that the ease was a very serious one, and fined the defendant .£lO and costs, or, in default, io he imprisoned for the space of two months.
