THE ASIATIC ISLANDS.

New Guinea. New Guinea is an island of very great extent, being twelve hundred miles long. Before the discoveries of Captain Cook it was supposed to be connected with New Holland, and it is still but very imperfectly known to Europeans. Tbe Natives of New Guinea have been generally considered as belonging to tbe race of .Eastern Negroes. Tbe aspect of tbese people is said to be frigiuful and

hideous. Their skin of a shining black ;is rough and often dbfigrired with marks litce those occasioned by the leprosy. Thc»y have very large eyes. flat noses, amazingly large mouths, and Woolly liair, either of a shining black or a fiery red. Some adorn their Hair with feathers,. and. others increase their natural ugliness by.boring their noses and. pressing through itiem slicks or ; pieces of bone; and many hang tbir-imfes of boars round their necks by way offMaament. In some parts it would appear that the inhabitants of New Guinea have the genuine Malay complexion and features. It is related that in the interior there is a race railed Haialorus, who live in Jrees, ascending by a notched pole, which they draw up after thein to prevent surprise.—The World in Miniature.
