AGRICULTURAL SHOW.

The annual exhibition of the Auckland and New Ulster Agricultural and Horticultural Society took place in one of the paddocks, at the rear of the late Government House, on Thursday last. Wo regret to say the exhibition was unequal to those of previous seasons ; and we regret still more to observe that there were almost 110 articles of native produce brought forward 10 compote for a prize —the only articles for which we find a premium awarded being to llipeka for the best grown pumpkin, and to Hemi Kiu'ens* for the best grapes. Such ft result is unfortunate. It casts a damp upon the exhibition, and is discouraging to those who entertain a lively anxiety for tho progress and the prosperity of the Agricultural and Hoiticultnrat" interests of New Zealand. To such Societies as these, the rapid advancement of the English as a skilful, energetic, and prosperous farming Nation are materially attributable ; and, as there is nothing so entirely calculated to lead to improvement in husbandry as a generous spirit of competition, wu cannot but lament anything like a failure, even although for a single season. It has been said that the exhibition took place too early in the season, and that sufficient public intimation of the day 011 which it was to be held had not been given. Whether this were so or not, it is not wotli while now to inquire. If au error has been committed the Society will be able next year to profit by the experience. Though disappointed, they are in no degree discouraged they are liKely to receive a considerable acccs- j sion to their numbers during the present year, and we have no doubt that many beneficial alterations and improvements in the prize lists are likely to take place ; so that when the next show is held there is every probability that it will far surpass any that has yet been presented in New Zealand.
