HE WANTED MORE FOR IKE
, Prosecuting a. batch of half-a-dozen Hebrew lads at London Guildhall on August 17 for stealing from automatic machines on railway platforms by means of metal discs. Mr Margetts. solicitor to the Automatic Company, informed the alderman that these thefts were jrrfaily on the ihfiviiso. and sever? punishment was nocossary to slop it. Within a month, over 1.000
metal discs had been found in the machines at different stations on the Underground. These boys were caught in the act, and upon one was found 146 discs and a number of packets of sweetmeats.—The alderman agreed that severe punishment must be inflicted, and ordered each of the lads to be birched, some to receive three strokes and the others six. One' of the fathers present rubbed his hands gleefully together, thanked the alderman, and remarked to the boy, "Goot! That vill do you gott, Ike!" But a young Jewess vehemently protested against. " the cruelty " of the sentence upon her little brother, saying it would only make him worse.—The Alderman: 1 do not intend to alter my decision. -You may live to thank me.— The boys were then takt-n to the cells, and shortly afterwards there was a tremendous yelping and shrieks of " No. morel" -i Don't, it hurts I'" The father of Ike, who witnessed .the execution of the sentence, was so satisfied that- he told the officer to give his ike an extra two or three. His desire was not complied with.
