[ Patearoa versus Ranfurly. (By Our Patearoa Correspondent). . The fifth match of the season between the above clubs was played at Ranfurly on the 3rd inst. Ranfurly .ware again without Sayers and Gorrie, while Patearoa were minus Taylor, iviacalpine, and R, Carr Ranfurly batted first Two out of every three balls rose over the stumps, and the scoring was on that account rather slow, the whole side taking an hou ant*, a.half to make 56 Chirnside and M'Skimming each kept a fine length in bowling, the former getting five for: 14 The fielding was good and W Pearce brought off one of his wonderful 9ft high catches at point. Patearoa, like Ranfurly, began well, but they kept up their rate of scoring almost right to the end W Chirnside was in good form, and his score of 46 was made by excellent batting The bowling was of Ranfurly's usual sound description, and the fielding was on the whole good. M'Kay took two nice catches; The runs were scored at twice the rate of Ranfurly's

There was still two hours of playing time left, and some capital batting, with the assistance of the most inefficient fielding I have ever had the misfortune to see, enabled Ranfurly to close their innings with the excellent score of 113 for five wickets, leaving Patearoa 55 runs to make in half an hour Sutherland batted forcefully and well, and Baker, Kennedy, and Bell backed him up manfully, ■ H,. Pearce was the successful bowler. It was hardly to be expected that the runs would be got or that ten Patearoa wickets would fall in the time, and the match ended with two wickets down for 32, L Pearce (14) and M'Skimming - (13! being not out and going strongly when time was up, Fatearoa therefore won by-59 runs on the first innings. •" Hanpy " M'Lean got W. N Pearce and Carr with .legbreaks that would have astonished Armtrong. " Happy " told me when I remarked on the fearful twisters, that he could get the break on all right, but that he hadn't any idea as to which part of the paddock the ball would pitch on Twice, however, the ball landed about four .feet to leg and then horseshoed around behind the batsman on to the stumps. TJnlucky Dan Bell got an eye decorated by a bumping ball while wicketkeeping and agile Tom Forrester, pitching himself full length at a'hot r'turn, from hia own bowling, gave his old football knee a nasty twist. Messrs Sam Slater' and T. Johnston scored, and Umpires Crerar and Cooper were the board of control. Ranfurly have to their credit three out of the five games played, There is one more on thf list (17th inst.) with a possible decider
