Patearoa v. Linnburn.- ' (By Our Patearoa Correspondent) : This match was played here on , Xraae Day, and, b~b is usual when we meet such a team of young-fellowa out for a holiday) was a friendly, free and easy game." Free and easy it was in more wayß than one. There was, a free passage 'to the'Linnburn men's wicketa in many instances, and a straight ball usually got in eaßily, while the linguistic by-play of several of their team was wonderfully : free and uttered with great and flueatease. • They had several men who Showed skill in the various departments of the game. J. Downea, of the OpohO'Club (on a. shooting excursion here), batted in first-rate style, while Captain Kelly is a brilliant arid active field, and Kay, as wicket-keeper, although: I believe not a player of experience, : is a man of great natural ability for the position, and one who stood up to and stopped the fast bowling unflinchingly. He also takes well from the field. As for their bowling, the analysis shows the proficiency of some of them and hides that of others. Kelly's 3 for 21, Henderson's 3 for 3, Bowden's 1 foi 3, and Jones S for 1 are figures: that apeak for themselves, while J.loyc\ who bowled more overs than aay of them, took 3 for 81, and bowled far better than his analysis would infer. Lambeth (another Dunedin man) is a born actor. After being caught from a Boft one to cover-point, he prepared to receive the next ball as if nothing had ; happened. As my birthplace in the Old Country lies north of the joke line, his natural way of doing it deceived me; but it was-laughable which ever way you took it. Lloyd learnt his cricket-in London, and understands the game thoroughly; He was the only man on the ground jwho seemed to grasp one of tke first principles of cricket —that appeals should be Bharply and frequently made. How the dickens are you to get a man out if you don't appeal? None of his appeals was .sucwaful, but, judging by the hesitation of the umpire, he was very near it on three or four occasions when be claimed an l.b.w. from the outfield.
lhe Patearoa men played well all round. W. Chirnaide batted in good form and his score was shorn of a certain boundary by the intervention of the Linnburn umpire's ribs. Keely and Johnston also played well while M'Skimming put up a first-rate 30. Thiß young player is a valuable member of the team. He made the highest score in the match and took eight wickets for 12 runs—a very fine performance. He is also one of our best fields and differs from many players in being keen and very willing. Johnston took 3 wickets for 4 runs. Patearoa won by 73 runs and the visitors took their defeat - cheerfully and like good sports. Mr J. Crerar and a strange gentleman umpired and Mr Gibbon scored.Linnburn. Bowden, b M'Skimming .. 0 Lambeth, c H. Kennedy, b Johnston 1 Downes, c Keely, b M'Skimming \ 21 J. Kerr, b M'Skimming .. 0 J.
