RANFURLY V. PATEAROA. $ (By Our Patearoa Correspondent.) The above game was played at Ranfurly last Saturday, in one of the celebrated local winds. We were without Wilson, Carr, M'Lean, Schrick and Johnston, while Ranfurly were stronger than they had ever been. Sayerß, their captain, is a fine bat and a firstrate general, and Gorrie, another new man, is a good all-round player. The influence of Sayer's coaching was evident, and many runs were added to the score by improved running between wickets alone. Their fielding is also much improved, taking it all through, and the catching and returning from the field were mostly very good. Tom Forrester did fine work, and Reid made two cool and sure catches in the longfie3d. Harold Screen did well with the gloves. Cooper's all around improvement keeps pace with the years, and in the course of time he will no doubt be heard of in big cricket. The bowling of Baker, Cooper, Sayers, and Gorrie was good. The latter, who is expert at taking the ball from the field finding no excuse to run anybody in consoled himself by running one out. We lost by 34 runs' fairly and squarely, and the Ranfurly boys are such thoroughly fine fellows ar.d such rseverers under difficulties that one is pleased to see them meet with deserved encouragement On the Patearoa side, the only doubles on either innings were Cambrdgc (22) and H Pearce (20) (Cambridge, in the first innings, got a bad blow f on the cheekbone from a bumpy fast one of Gorrie's, and though he pluckly insisted on playing on, his cheek was so swollen as to prevent him having a clear view of the bowler, and he fell immediately. In the second innings however, he batted with determinetion, and his score was put on by clean hitting. Pearce's score included some good leg hits, and, with his good bowling and grand fielding, he was the best all-round man on the side. The bowling of W. Pearce was deadly in the second innings, and Keeley got two wickets for one run each. Of the eight catches taken by Patearoa, young M'Skimming claimed three, each of them taken like a cricketer j Mr Miller was at his post as scorer for Ranfurly, and umpire J Crerar ditto fqjr Patearoa. We had a firstclass table at the Railway Dining Rooms after the match. &».. • Scores : Patearoa—lst Innings.
