CRICKET.

« ♦ -- ■- —• PATEAROA V. NASEBY B. i By Our Patearoa Correspondent. ' Things in the cricket line were unpromising here up till Saturday last, when the above match was played. We had difficulty in getting a team, regular players like Johnston, M'Lean and Carr being unable to get away. Greer, Pearce and Tregonning filled these players' places well, however; and Naseby being without some of their best men, a very close game landed us winners, for a change. An unpleasantly strong wind blew all through the match, and every movement of the players raised dust. The only double figure scorer in Patearoa's first innings was Wlson, who played in his old form for 12. The total of 48 was firstrate, from a Naseby poiint of view, and the other way about for us. Edwards and Paisley bowled with success toward the close of the innings. Marshall made a splendid running catch, onehanded, in the longfield. Naseby's effort with the bat was even less successful than ours, Hore and Edwards being highest with seven each out of a total of 37. Without a doubt, the bowling of Chirnside and Pearce was good, l * and the fielding supported it. Pearce made a fine catch in the longfield well judged. Patearoa made 79 in their second innings, Wilson again being highest scorer with a capital 27. Greer contributed a priceless 11, not out, and D. Chirnside stayed in a long time for 8. The bowling and fielding were good ail round, but for a short time nobody seemed able to catch Wilson out. The boy Calder made a good catch, and Marhall brought off another of his un„ common ones.

Naseby wanted 91 to win, and Hilton and Hore started off as if they meant to get them. Hilton, although he got a painful blow while batting, played in excellent style, and the total of 79 was largely indebted to him for his score of 33. Paisley showed great promise, and he was next highest with a cleanly hit 16. He got the only four in the match. The total was a dozen short and Patearoa won by that number. Chirnside again bowled excellently, and Keeley, doffing pads and gloves, at a critical time, did good service in dismissing Hilton. J. Crerar umpired for Patearoa as asual, and a Naseby boy and others scored. Patearoa,—lst Innings.
