News was received frbm Clyde, on the 14th inst that a fatal accident occurred to a young man named, James Schrick when he was attempting to cross the Molyneux River by one 'of the public chairs. It appears that fie missed taking his seat in the chair as it moved from the stagingand hung pn to the side of the box until it had rim out oh the rope to a point over the centre of the'river Here the unfortunate young man remained hanging from the chair, while 150 ft bel°w: a seething rapid swpt past with resounding roar that almost drowned his cries for assistance. About the time his call for help was heard he let go his hold and fatt into the river. He was seen to float some distance in the terrible rappid and finally disappear in a whirlpool at a bend in the stream some 200; yards below the chair. Schrick was well known all over Maniototo, being a native of Patearoa, where his friends reside. Hehadonly been in the Clyde district for about twelve months. A great heal of sympathy is felt byall who kew himfor his friends and sorrow at his tragic and untimely end.
