RANFURLY.

(By a Corrkspokdbht.)

The Eweburn school broke up for the holidays on Wednesday, the 20th. For a few weeks past the children have been collecting money for prizes to be distributed at a picnic on bieaking-up day. The weather turned out very unfavourable at first, rain coming on about 9.30 a m., with every appearance of continuing. Nevertheless, the children, with a few of the parents, turned np at the appointed hour (1 o'clock) and by 2 o'clock a fair audience had assembled to enjoy a very nice little programme of action Bongs, exercises and recitations- by the ohildren. The next part of the proceedings was a competition for a special prize for recitation by Std, V (won by Martina Hansen), followed by a spelling bee by Std. IV (won by Sarah Millar). The judging in these was satisfactorily performed by Measrß Malone, Pavitt, and Drewitt, and they found the performances very creditable to all.

The school prizes were then presented by the chairman of the school committee (Mr VV. Mawhioney) and the secretary (Mr J. Morgan), every child receiving a very handsome book

After tea and cake had been handed round by the ladies, races were run for toys, The rain had quite cleared off by this time and much excitement and keen competition took place ipr the handsome coys bestowed as prizes, consolation prizes of sixpences and threepennyß being doled out as a solace to non -successful candidates. After supplies of lollies had been handed round, the Chairman announced that the proceedings would terminate with cheers and thanks to Miss Drummey their teacher, with hopes that she would have a pleasant holiday. Thanks were also accorded to the general public for responding so liberally to the demands of the children collecting. The whole affair was planned end carried out by Miss Drummey, who deserves much credit, the committee, doing practically nothing but smile approval, knowing probably that it was in able hands,
