REDUCED RAILWAY RATES.

The new scale of fares and charges will come into force on the Government railways on October. i2. At present the ordinary single fare is at the rate of Id per mile, but on and after October 12 the amount chained for distances between 50 and 100 miles will be at the rate of of j|d per mile; while for distances of 100 miles and over only a a mile will be charged. In the case of tgturn tickets the amount will be double the ordinary fare. The following will show how the new rates will compare with those now ; in. forpe: —For a journey 100, miles the first-ciass slrigle fare will b'fe lis 7d, as against 12s 7d, and second-class single fare 7s od, as compared with Ss Sil. For 150 miles the reduction in single fare will be-First-class, from ISs 10d to ios 9d ; secondclass. from 12s 7d to 9s Gd. If a journey of 200 miles (one way only) is taken a firstclass passenger will pay 16s 9d, instead of 25s Id, as at present; and a second-class passenger lis 7d, instead of 19s lid. There are also to be reductions in picnic, school, and factory fares, and Special concessions will be made to people who take out round tickets for the hot lakes, cold lakes, and Hanmer Springs during the summer months. The department has also decided upon a reduction for the carriage of dairy produce, Artificial manures, and many other lines.. Provision is made for the carriage of motor cars, motor bicycles, and motor tricycles, and also for the conveyance of horses by all mail and express trains. The rates for wool have been largely reduced , and reductions have also been made for the carriage of artificial manure, tar required by local bodies, bacon, hams, eggs, honey, cheesfe', poultry, &c. The time for return of stud stock to owners has been increased from one month to three months.
