A Record Pie.
■People In ot'her parts of the United Kingdom may worry themselves about foreign and domestic politics, but the inhabitants of Denby Dale, near Huddersfield, are occuppying- themselves with a matter of much greater importance (says the "Pall Mall Gazette"). They are' wrapped up in thoughts of pie, absorbed in contemplating the rich feast in store for them 011 Ist August, when a vast expanse of .pastry, provided by the public men of the village to commemorate the Repeal of t'he Corn Laws in 1846, will be placed 'before the knives and forks and fingers of a pie-loving people. Meanwhile, the pie committee holds nightly sittings, for the plans and estimates are of an elaborate character, Involving much discussion which the chairman finds it difficult to keep within parliamentary bounds, for local feeling and sentiment are profoundly interested in the subject. The proportions of the dish have at length been decided by this pie parliament, though not, it is needless to add, without provoking- some of the most eloquent and touching speeches ever delivered in Denby Dale. In order to allay public excitement in the village, the chairman of the committee has given the following extract from the official record of the proceedings on the occasion of the great dish debate: "And it is hereby finally resolved that the dish be 10ft. long, fiCt. Bin. wide, and Ift. deep." After this, in case of a pie competition, it would be a safe thing to back the Denby Daleites against the world.
