The following telegram has been sent to all post and telegraph offices throughout the colony, as well as to members of Parliament, chairmen of education .boards, of hospital and charitable aid boards, and of county councils, to mayors of boroughs, chairmen of town districts, road boards, river boards, harbour boards, and school committees, and to head masters of public schools throughout the colony:— The recent developments in South Africa point to the early possibility of peace being declared, and in order to prevent aDy independent action in different portions of the colony, and for the purpose of having a general recognition in the colony of such an important event. I desire to inform you that the Government have decided that a general holiday shall be declared a few days after the declaration of peace has iieen made, and thus enable people throughout the colony to arrange for a fitting final celebration, to mark an event of such vast importance to the Empire. As you occupy a representative position you should know what is contemplated, and I am sure you will recognise that uniformity of action throughout New Zealand, on a day to be arranged is advisable. I will advise you of the date fixed for the celebration as soon as possible after the news of the declaration of peace comes to hand.—lam, &c., J. G. Ward, Acting-Prein'ier.
