OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.

CAMBRIA^. The weather has cleared up a<»ain find yesterday (Monday), i* was "midsummer's day. To-day, it was very much colder, and. there was every prospect of more" rain. V FARMING. operations are in full swing, and it is to be hoped that nothing may come to interrupt them until everything is finished. ■ THE VEGKTABLE . arid flower gardens are also taking up some attention, too. In St. Bathans most of this work was done some time ago, but here it was impossible to -do anything until the--last:, few the ground was unfit. ~ ■ ■■ ■ MINING OPEBATIONS, as I said last time, are in in Mr E.vihg's Cambrian claim. They have washed up again and'since got started into another paddpclt.>""T did.not hear whaf amount of- gofd-wai' taken out of the last paddock. Messrs Fordhamand Gay are work l ing away steadily and putting through a good deal of stuff. As last wash up did not turn out very well Messrs M'Guckin and, party have decided to let their claim have a spell. I understand Messrs S. Morgan and Davis have token over the company's water and are working each on his own behalf. Ewing's Vinegar Flat claim, which at one time employed upward of 20 hands is now managed by four all told. This is on account of the fact that the ground being worked now is all granite with very few stones. f Messrs Morgan and Hughes are working away steadily having got clear off the slip that came in on tnerrT some time ago. Altogether mining is looking up just now. • THE NEXT ELKCTI6N . for the county council, which I; faeaf comes off in November, will see a new candidate from, this part of the St. Bathans riding. It is a pity Cambrian and St.* Bithans could not be separated into two separate ridings. While I think of it, a person was remarking that it was very strange that the returning officer and clerk for the poll taken here should always be appointed, from St Bathans. I think there are men here who are sufficiently qualified to carry out such a slight task, and it is nothing but "right that the ratepayers at this end should have a say in the matter. The last time the poll was taken the ballot box and - key which had always been kept, so I hear in the school were asked for,- but neither were returned. The ballot box is lying in a shattered condition in our public hall and the key is, where ? SCHOOL ATTENDANCE is still at a ..low ebb, last week's average being '"about 20, -and so far this week bids to be very much lower, as the highest for any day is only 18. This is all to be accounted for by the fact- that measles has visited almost every house, in which there are any young children Every family having members attending school has had the measles, with only cne exception. The average attendance since some time in last June has been below 20, out of a roll number of 59. OUR COAL PITS are both in full swing now, and putting but some first-class coal, which is quite a treat, some that was put out in the winter being of a very poor quality. OUR NEW SCHOOL fence is likely to go up very soon, as all the material has at last arrived ready for erection. This will be a great improvement.on the look of the place. After the fence is erected a. a few macrocarpas should be planted all round, and so put a finished ap--pearance to the place. UHEfKJING is taking up the attention of a few in tLjs locality, but so far we have no local brokers. I expect there is not sufficient to entice anyone "to launch out, and, besides, those who are interested would sooner go straight to the centre to do business. October, 10, 1899, "
