MATTERS EDUCATIONAL AT RANFURLY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln your report of the Education Board's business at their last Meeting you mention the fact that I had, on behalf of the residents, applied for the erection of a school at Ranfurly. Also, that the Eweburn School Committee had lodged an objection. In order that the public uwy see what was actually asked for I am sending you a cop**' of the letter I wrote the : board. I shall esteem it a very great favour if you will kindjy insert it in your next.issue. All impartial persons will at once see that we have not asked for anything from the Eweburn School Committee. or do I see how our application can affect them. There are a number of children in the district who will simply be deprived of the benefits of education because they live at too great a distance from any existing school. The parents are for obvious reasous unable to i>iove their homes to the school, the natural inference of course, being, a wish to have a school built in a central position so that their children can have a share ot the education that they pay for, iu at least equal ratio to any of the members of the Eweburn School Committee. I may say-I have the authority of one of the members of the committee for saying that there - was no meeting convened, ana that he and another committeeman were totally in the dark as regards the objection, the first intimation they had of the matter being the brief mention of it in your report of the board's busipesg. .Now, Sir, we' have plenty of children t«> start a good school without interfering with any of those now attending the Eweburn school. • My letter to the board, asks that an Jtupeclor be tent to 'report oh the advisability of erecting a tvhool at Ranfurly. If he reports f&yojirably I presume we will get a school not-, withstanding the objection of the Eweburn School Committee, or more correctly speaking the objection of the chairman and secretary. Surely their action was ill-ad-vised to say the least of it. What earthly reason they have for objecting to our appli cation passes tny comprehension. I can only suppose that" it is selfishness or to use a Yankeeism, pure vussedness. Perhapß the secretary will explain, and I am sure that with your usual courtesy, you. Sir. will grant him space. Thanking you in anticipation.— 1 am, &c. f John G. MriauAN. December 28th, 1898. The following is the letter addressed to the Education Board : • Banfnrly, 10/12/98. The Chairman and Members of the Education Board. , Gkntlemkn,—At a public meeting held at Ranfurly to-day it was decided (hat the Education Board be written to asking that an inspector be sent to report on the advisability of erecting a school at Ranfurly. Ihere ate already a large number of children available, and as Ranfurly is a growing township the probabilities are that a good school could be supported. I»m instructed to state that if an inspector ia sent at an earlydate it could be arranged that several of the residents would meetnimand explain the facts of the case to him. I might suggest that us the inspector is in the district it could be arranged for him to call at once. Trusting that you will give the matter favourable consideration, I have the honour to be, Gentlemen, ' Yours faithfully, John G. Morgan.
