Sales of wate> from the Mount Ida and Blackstone Hill ' Water rapes, Otago, for the month of NoVembjer /uuounted to £223 16s sof. The total amount due by parties supplied by phcse rapes' up to the 30th November was £262 4s 4d, of which £233 16s 5d was paid, leaving a balance due of £2B_ 7s lid. In "The/'Mining Act Amendment Act, 1896 ? " it was provided that, on account of the difficulty experienced Jii procuring duly certificated mjne managers, it was deemed expedient to make temporary provision in that behalf by the issue of provisional warrants on the recommendation, pf the Inspector; suph warrants, unless sooner cancelled, to remain in force until the Ist January, 1899 ? eo long as the bolder continued to be manager of the mine named in the provisional warrant. It was further provided that the Inspector of Mines should make a halfyearly inspection of every mine managed by a provisional minemanager, report to the Minister the **suk of such inspection, with specia) reference tp the nature of the management and. the capacity of the provisional manager; and that on or before November, 1898, the Inspector, should make to the Board of "Examiners a special report as to the capacity and fitness of every person who bad acted as manager of a mine finder a provisional warrant. Severityseven., applications were sent in for certificates, and the Board of/Ex•jnjPprshaVe been'holding a special sitting in Wellington, making ,the necessary inquiry and examination as to the fitness of the various candidates Altogether there were 285 provisional 'issued, and 71 certificates have been granted by the board.— N.Z.
