BORING FOR ARTESIAN WATER.

TO THE KDITOB. . ' . Sib,—lsendyou thefollowingpartidularsof boring at Eweburn. You will obser'Ve that the various strata since last report aire of a greater thickness, and are composed chiefly [ of clay, or, to use the proper term, pappa rock. You will understand that clay, or pappa, is impervious to water, but iii the Beds of sand mentioned there is' a little water. The last mentioned bed of sand contains more than the ones passed through previously, although it does not show quite as , high a rise as the one I got at 340 feet, which also goes a long way to prove that those beds are not connected. If they were the level would be the same.

The contract depth (500 ft) was reached a . few weeks sgo. Operations were then suspended for a time, as it was necessary for me to go to Christchurch on business in con- ! nection with the work, and During that time arrangements were made to continue boring to a depth- of 650 ft. I selected all material to be used for coutiniiing the bore, but, owing to the bad weather, !tr only arrived ou the ground to-day. It will take some few days to get. things.ipjgjsition to start again. As I found in the boring that has already, been done, that, owing to the hard nature of the greater portion . the ground, that I should have to put on : additional machinery to do the. turning, i The last 100 feet bored took two men to turn the drill. It is likely that the bore will shortly have to be reduced to a smaller size, as it was not intended to take the first lot of casing down to much, greater depth than that already reached ; but the full size will be kept to as deep as possible, and it is only w hen absolutely necessary that • tele-, scoping will be done. I subjoin particulars of strata £— \
