Lieut-colonel Gordon was last Friday evening presented by Sub-colonel Snmpter, at Oimiaru, on lmhalf of the North Otago volunteers, with a beautifully-illuminated testimonial anil a silver biscuit barrel on his severing his connection with the district. A high tribute was paid to the zeal with which the recepient had always carried out his duties and the uniform courtesy he had always shown to the officers and men. The Otago Central railway at Middlemarch is now in good working order, and traffic has commenced on the Hue there. The stationmaster is expected to arrive in a few days. Since the introduction of the railway, building operations have been in full swing, and there is every probability of several important villages springing" up shortly along the line of route.—"Advocate." The " Pall Mall Gazette " commends the action taken by Mr. A. IT. Champion, the English labour advocate, during the recent strike in the colonies, and declares that events justified the statements made by him regarding it.
